The Black Diamond Trail is a work in progress that is eventually planned to span from Taughannock State Park to Robert Treman State Park. At present, you can pick up the path in Cass Park near the entrance to the Children’s Garden and cruise 8.5 miles north to the western side of Taughannock Park. Nestled in the trees, the trail is wide and smooth, ideal for foot traffic and bicycles in the summer and cross country skis in winter. You can go for 3.5 miles from Cass Park without having to cross a road. It’s a remarkable local resource for a trail that you can pick up so close to downtown.
The surface is small-grain, packed gravel that accommodates bike tires well, but it is not suitable for skateboards, scooters, or small-wheeled strollers.
There are no bathrooms along the trail, but there are facilities at Cass and Taughannock Parks on the ends of the path.
